Exhibition
Emma Mayer: A glass half empty, a shoe half filled
July 12 - August 25 2019
Hot and devious
I paint my eyelids
and my mouth makes
a hard red * o *
If this is a dancefloor
I am 10000 refractions
of low hanging light
I sway
Slop warm jelly
down my front
Press a cool spoon
to my temple
Drop crystalware
just to watch it glint
I did this dance
in a dream once and
now I just follow thru
the motions
Will you applaud me?
Throw me a
wet bouquet?
I feel stained
by all of the things
that have rubbed
up against me
Yet still I remain,
My nose pressed
firmly in a corner
I did not come here
under a guise of tenderness
I came with patent heels
and a cold wish
I am diabolical I am
brilliant I am a piece of foam
— Natalie Podaima
A glass half empty, a shoe half filled is Emma Mayer’s first solo exhibition. Through a process of collection, curation, and transformation, Mayer presents an amalgamation of misremembered events, melancholic nostalgia and strange objects. Disjointed narratives and clownish characters interact with pseudo-pastoral scenes, cutting calm with confusion. Mayer focuses on skewing scale and manipulating sound and moving image to create an assemblage of disparate, yet harmonious imagery drawn from domestic settings, interior life, and memory.
